THIRD DEFENDANT IN $20 MILLION SCAM THAT SOLD FAKE ART NATIONWIDE VIA TV AUCTIONS SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON

LOS ANGELES – A Woodland Hills man who sold fake art – including works purported to be by Picasso, Dali and Chagall – through a rigged televised art auction has been sentenced to five years in federal prison.
James Mobley, 63, was sentenced yesterday afternoon to 60 months in prison by United States District Judge Gary A. Feess.
Mobley, who was an on-air auctioneer for sales conducted through Fine Art Treasures Gallery, previously pleaded guilty to two felony counts – conspiracy (to commit wire fraud, mail fraud, and interstate transportation of stolen property) and willful failure to file a tax return.
Fine Art Treasures Gallery operated an art auction television show, which aired on Friday and Saturday nights on DirecTV and The Dish Network. The company sold art to more than 10,000 customers around the United States, bringing in more than $20 million.
Earlier this year, the husband-and-wife team at the center of the Fine Art Treasures Gallery scam were sentenced to prison. Gerald Sullivan, 54, of La Cañada Flintridge, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and interstate transportation of stolen property, was sentenced by Judge Feess to four years in prison. Sullivan’s wife, Kristine Eubanks, 52, also of La Cañada Flintridge, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy (to commit mail fraud, wire fraud, interstate transportation of stolen property) and filing a false income tax return, was sentenced to 84 months in prison. When he sentenced Eubanks, Judge Feess said that the fraud scheme was “audacious in its scope” and “blatantly illegal.” Eubanks and Sullivan ran the scheme from 2002 through 2006. Mobley participated in the scheme from 2002 through 2005.
Fine Art Treasures Gallery and its representatives, including Mobley, falsely told customers that art sold on the company’s television show had been found at “estate liquidations all over the world.” In reality, Fine Art Treasures Gallery sold fake and forged art that had been purchased from suppliers, as well as forgeries Eubanks and others themselves had printed and signed on behalf of the artists. Eubanks admitted that she obtained fake art from various suppliers, printed other art works in her own printing shop, and sold that bogus art on the auction as genuine. Eubanks and others forged signatures on some of the works, including purported lithographs from Picasso, Chagall and Dali. To support the scam, Eubanks also forged Certificates of Authenticity for certain pieces and provided falsified appraisals for some of the jewelry that was sold to customers. Eubanks and Mobley also rigged the bidding for the auction process by arranging for fake bids to be announced on the program to falsely drive up prices for the art they sold to the public.
As part of the investigation into Fine Arts, federal authorities seized approximately $3.8 million from bank accounts controlled by Eubanks and Sullivan. Those funds have been forfeited to the government, which is in the process of notifying thousands of potential victims that they may have purchased bogus artworks.
This case was investigated by the national Art Crime Team at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, IRS - Criminal Investigation, and the Los Angeles Police Department’s Art Theft Detail.

COUNTDOWN TO COMET FLYBY DOWN TO NINE DAYS

PASADENA, Calif. - NASA's EPOXI mission continues to close in on its target, comet Hartley 2, at a rate of 12.5 kilometers (7.8 miles) per second. On Nov. 4 at about 10:01 a.m. EDT (7:01 a.m. PDT) the spacecraft will make its closest approach to the comet at a distance of about 700 kilometers (434 miles). It will be the fifth time that a comet has been imaged close-up and the first time in history that two comets have been imaged with the same instruments and same spatial resolution.

"Hartley 2 has already put on a great show with more than a few surprises for the mission's science team," said EPOXI principal investigator Mike A'Hearn from the University of Maryland, College Park. "We expect more of the unexpected during encounter."

Science observations of comet Hartley 2 began on Sept. 5. The imaging campaign is more than a tantalizing tease of things to come. It is providing EPOXI's science team the best extended view of a comet in history during its pass through the inner solar system. The observations will continue through the encounter phase of the mission.

The hours surrounding comet encounter will be especially challenging for the mission team as they are commanding a recycled spacecraft that was not designed for this comet flyby. The spacecraft was designed and employed successfully for NASA's Deep Impact encounter of comet Tempel 1 back on July 4, 2005. By recycling Deep Impact's already built, tested and in-flight spacecraft, the EPOXI mission provided savings on the order of 90% that of a hypothetical mission with similar goals, starting from the ground up.

"If we were starting from scratch we'd probably move some of the spacecraft's components to different locations," said Tim Larson, project manager for the EPOXI mission from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "But we've developed a creative way to work with what we have.  This spacecraft, and mission team, have logged 3.2 billion miles over the past five years, and we are confident that we have a successful plan in place to give Hartley 2 a thorough look-see."

The mission's encounter phase begins the evening of Nov. 3, when the spacecraft is about 18 hours from the time of closest approach to the comet's nucleus. At that time the spacecraft will stop transmitting through its large high-gain antenna and reorient itself so its two visible-light and one infrared imager maintain lock on the comet for the next 24 hours-plus.

"When the encounter phase begins all images the spacecraft takes will be stored aboard its two computers," said Larson. "Soon after we fly past the comet at about 7 a.m. local time, we will be able to re-orient the spacecraft so that we maintain imaging lock on the comet nucleus while pointing our big high gain antenna at Earth."

At that point, the spacecraft will begin beaming down its cache of cometary close-ups while continuing to take new images. It is expected to take several hours for all the images held aboard spacecraft memory to be downliked.

"We will be waiting," said A'Hearn. "The images at closest approach won't get to Earth until many hours after the actual encounter due to the way we use memory on the spacecraft.  We will get some early hints at how this nucleus differs from that of comet Tempel 1 based on five images that will get to Earth only about one hour after closest approach."

EPOXI is an extended mission that utilizes the already "in-flight" Deep Impact spacecraft to explore distinct celestial targets of opportunity. The name EPOXI itself is a combination of the names for the two extended mission components: the extrasolar planet observations, called Extrasolar Planet Observations and Characterization (EPOCh), and the flyby of comet Hartley 2, called the Deep Impact Extended Investigation (DIXI). The spacecraft will continue to be referred to as "Deep Impact."

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., manages the EPOXI mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The University of Maryland, College Park, is home to the mission's principal investigator, Michael A'Hearn. Drake Deming of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., is the science lead for the mission's extrasolar planet observations. The spacecraft was built for NASA by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo.

PASADENA TRAFFIC OFFICERS CONVERGE ON WHOLE FOODS MARKET

PASADENA, CA   Tomorrow, October 27th, at 12:30 p.m., the Pasadena Police Department Traffic Section will hold its monthly Off-Site briefing at Whole Foods Market at 465 S Arroyo Parkway in Pasadena. The hour long session will include the Traffic Section’s briefing with the second half dedicated to questions and answers from the public. The briefing will take place on the second floor of Whole Food Market. The public is invited to attend and ask traffic or police related questions.

“The purpose of this is two fold,” says Lieutenant Randell Taylor.  “We always have a briefing to discuss specific problem locations or noticeable trends that are causing accidents.  But by taking it out to where people can hear that discussion and ask questions, we have the opportunity to let our citizens know what we’ve been noticing and we can provide a public education opportunity to those who might otherwise not have or take the time. It also gives the public the opportunity to let us know of problem areas that they have noticed so that we can take a look at what methods may be available to mitigate them.”

Off-Site Briefings occur monthly with locations to be announced.  For more information about the briefings, or for information about Traffic Enforcement, please call Lt. Taylor.

SEPTEMBER DISARM SEARCHES NET 207 ARRESTS, 109 FIREARMS AND OVER $17.5 MILLION IN DRUGS AND CASH CONFISCATIONS

LOS ANGELES COUNTY — During the month of September, D.I.S.A.R.M. Officers confiscated 109 weapons – including 34 handguns, 4 assault rifles, and 21 rifles/shotguns, $17.5 million in illegal drugs, and arrested 207 probationers during 1,660 unannounced searches of residences, persons, vehicles, and businesses, announced Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich .

The searches were conducted through the Probation Department’s D.I.S.A.R.M. (Developing Increased Safety through Arms Reduction Management) program, initiated by Supervisor Antonovich following the tragic August 1999 shootings at the North Valley Jewish Community Center and the murder of a postal worker by Buford Furrow, an armed felon on probation from Washington State .

The D.I.S.A.R.M. program entails pairing Deputy Probation Officers with local law enforcement personnel to perform unannounced searches of probationers and their homes, as a condition of probation, and targets the confiscation of guns, drugs, and other contraband.

Since its implementation in February of 2000, the D.I.S.A.R.M. program has seized over 6,500 weapons and more than $188 million in illegal drugs and drug money, and resulted in 13,000 arrests.  Ten percent of probationers searched in this program have been found to be out of compliance with their terms of probation.

PASADENA ARTS BUS SCHEDULES ON GOOGLE TRANSIT

Finding bus routes, stops and departure times just got easier and faster for Pasadena residents and visitors thanks to a partnership between the city of Pasadena and Google Transit.

Google’s Transit Trip Planner now includes detailed information on the six routes of Pasadena Area Rapid Transit System (ARTS) buses and Metro buses and trains.

It’s similar to getting driving directions in Google Maps, but by clicking on the “By public transit” icon, the result of the query provides bus and rail directions.

By visiting www.google.com/transit or typing “Google Transit” into a web browser, transit users can access a powerful and convenient trip planner with a familiar interface. People with smartphones such as iPhone, Android and BlackBerry can also use the service.

Google Transit information can also be accessed at www.cityofpasadena.net/artsbus, where all schedules, maps, fare information and Metro’s Trip Planner are in one convenient place.

“Let’s say you are without a car at work, when unexpectedly you need to see someone in the hospital. Google Transit can tell you when the next bus is expected, where the bus stop is, the time it will take to walk to the bus stop and how to transfer if needed,” said Sebastián Hernández, associate planner in Pasadena Transportation Department.

Also listed are bus fares, other transit route options and images of streets where bus stops are located.

Less consumer knowledge is needed than with other servers. If someone wants to go to the Rose Bowl Stadium but doesn’t know the address, Google knows it, along with addresses of other place names and businesses.

Google Transit is available in more than 400 regions worldwide and in more than 10 languages.

The authentic Southern cooking was a hit with patrons and the media alike.  In 1999, USA Today food critic Jerry Shriver named The Lady and Sons “International Meal of the Year.”

The success of the restaurant paved the way for Paula Deen’s work in publishing.  She has sold more than eight million books and launched her bimonthly magazine title, Cooking With Paula Deen, read by more than one million readers.

In addition to her exceptional culinary talents, Deen’s warm personality, grounded nature and infectious love of food and family made her a natural television star.  Her first show, “Paula’s Home Cooking” premiered on the Food Network in November of 2002.  An instant hit with the audience, her second show, “Paula’s Party” premiered in 2006.  Today, Deen has two shows running concurrently on the Food Network, including “Paula’s Best Dishes” which premiered in 2008.

COACHELLA VALLEY MAN SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR SHOOTING LASER AT CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL HELICOPTER

RIVERSIDE, California – A Cathedral City man was sentenced today to 15 months in federal prison for shooting a laser at a California Highway Patrol helicopter that was providing support during a suspected burglary call.
Nathan Ramon Wells, 19, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Virginia A. Phillips. In addition to the prison term, Judge Phillips ordered Wells to be on supervised release for three years, during which he must spend three months at a community corrections center administered by the United States Bureau of Prisons.
Wells pleaded guilty in September to a felony count of interference with an operator of an aircraft, admitting that he knowingly fired a laser at a police helicopter.
On June 3, 2009, CHP officers in a helicopter were assisting Cathedral City Police Department investigators who had responded to a possible residential burglary call. While flying at an altitude of approximately 700 feet, the cockpit of the helicopter suddenly illuminated with a bright green light, which cased both CHP officers to look away and alter their course. The helicopter crew determined that the source of the light was a vehicle, which they followed through Cathedral City. Police on the ground stopped the vehicle, which contained Wells, who was in possession of a laser device.
The case against Wells is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which received assistance from the Cathedral City Police Department.

The design of the so-called Iconic Freeway Structure (IFS) bridge of the Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority

210 basket bridge coming

October 14, 2010 by admin
The design of the so-called Iconic Freeway Structure (IFS) bridge of the Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority over the eastbound 210 Freeway heading into Arcadia is nearly complete, with only final engineering tweaks to artist Andrew Leicester’s design before work begins on the bridge featuring woven baskets pictured below.
(Further updates on the overall Gold Line Foothill Extension from the Foothill Extension Authority following the photo below.)

Bridge to be built over eastbound 210 Freeway heading into Arcadia.
Following the August release of the Phase 2A (Pasadena to Azusa) Request for Proposals for Design-Build-Finance services (to construction the track, stations, a 25-acre Maintenance and Operations Facility, crossings, bridges, utilities and more), the three short listed teams are hard at work preparing proposals. Proposals for the $450+ million project are due in late January, and an award is anticipated for April. This schedule keeps us on track for a late 2014 project completion.
IFS design-build team Skanska USA/AECOM is spending the next several months finalizing designs for the 584-foot bridge over the eastbound lanes of the I-210 freeway. They are currently working with the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) to get the necessary permits to conduct some additional geologic testing at the IFS site location, which will help finalize the design (testing will take place in October).
Between now and April, when major construction is scheduled to begin on the bridge, AECOM (the designers) will work to turn the artist’s concept into an engineering reality.
Meanwhile, the Phase 2B environmental process is getting started. The consulting team, led by Parsons Brinckerhoff, is initiating work with the cities along the Phase 2B corridor, and will begin the public involvement process early in 2011. The Construction Authority will be preparing an Environmental Impact Report/Study (per CEQA/NEPA guidelines) for this 12.5-mile extension – evaluating the environmental impacts of the project and identifying ways to mitigate those impacts when feasible.
And finally, Construction Authority staff has been working around the clock to update the decade-old Authority website. Look for a revamped www.foothillextension.org website in late October.

Celebrate in Old-Fashioned Style at the Castle Green Holiday Tour Sunday, December 5, in Old Pasadena!

Celebrate in Old-Fashioned Style
at the Castle Green Holiday Tour
Sunday, December 5, in Old Pasadena!

The splendor of Pasadena’s golden era awaits you, as the Castle celebrates the holidays! Take a step back in time at the historic Castle Green, a blend of Moroccan and Victorian architecture, built in 1898 as part of the resort Hotel Green.  Now privately owned apartments, and generally closed to public, the building will open its gates and welcome visitors, for the annual Holiday Tour on Sunday, December 5th.

Once converted to private residences in the 1920’s, Castle Green attracted many designers, musicians, artists and collectors to live in the building. Those who find an interest in history, creative interior design, and cultural heritage, will see the original exterior and interior of this unique city landmark, the last remaining survivor of the hotel period in Pasadena.

While trained docents will be available, you may walk at your own pace through the original public rooms and over 20 individual apartments, all differently interpreted for the holidays.  See the Grand Salon, the Moorish and Turkish Rooms, the Palm Room, Sunroom and Veranda, the open cage elevator, fireplaces, hand-carved woodwork, and marble staircases, the bridge and penthouse, with a 360 view overlooking Pasadena, as well as artist studios.

A 14-foot Scotch pine and holiday music will welcome visitors entering the Grand Salon. Exhibits and signage will describe particular rooms and features, some with movie stills from as far back as 1918. Exhibition ballroom dancing by costumed Victorian-Era throwbacks, also for display and sale, turn-of-the-century style, hand-blown ornaments and glassware by artisan Evan Chambers. Guests will enjoy sweets and cider, and food samplings from local caterers.

The semi-annual tours of the Castle Green are organized by volunteer members of the nonprofit support arm, Friends of the Castle Green, whose mission is to provide and implement restoration to the building. All funds raised through the tours and merchandise sales are dedicated to the preservation of this landmark building.
